New Vocabulary
Yesterday we talked about another important word (theme) in our story: pride. We talked about healthy pride (like the way Greasers feel about their hair) and unhealthy pride (such as Ponyboy's pride in being a greaser when he was telling Jerry the teacher what he did).
Pride has both a positive and a negative side, as we discussed yesterday. Pride is a feeling of pleasure or satisfaction from your own achievement, the achievement of others, qualities you have, or your possessions. It is also thinking you are more important than you are because of who/how you are, what you have, what you look like, or what you can do.

"Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
Check out the videos and links page to see a video of Ponyboy reciting this for Johnny.
Remember to have it memorized by Monday, May 28th!

New Vocabulary
Here are some important words (themes) that we've learned for our story:
clique: a group of people who hang out regularly. People in a clique may act the same, dress the same, talk the same, and they might exclude others from their group (but not always).
identity: the characteristics, qualities, likes/dislikes, and hobbies that make you who you are. Your identity is what makes you unique. No one has the exact same identity as you.
inequality: not being equal. When people are treated better or worse based on the way they live, where they're from, or what family they are from, it is called inequality.

New Vocabulary
Stereotype: taking something you observe one person doing and applying it to the whole group to which that person belongs. Stereotypes are often (but not always) unfair or untrue.
Example: It is an incorrect stereotype to think that all Americans are tall and that all Chinese people are short.
This is another important word for our story. When Ponyboy talks to Cherry at the drive-in, they both discover that their stereotypes of the other group might not be completely true. For example, Cherry thinks that all Greasers are tough, mean, and dirty, but after meeting Johnny and Ponyboy, she's not so sure anymore.

After the video, go to this link to create your own blog:
Let's Rumble.
Hey guys!
We're about to start a really great story: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
As all of you should already know, this story was written by a girl when she was just 15 years old.
It's about friendship, making hard choices, and being a part of something even though you're left out.
It's honest, violent, and touching.
I know you're going to love it.
On this blog I will post videos, assignments, and links.
You will set up a blog of your own. On that blog, you have free rule. Make it look whatever way you want to.
Your goal with that blog will be to respond to the story, post journal entries in response to questions I've asked, and comment on other people's blogs.
I can't wait to start!
